Support and Advice on Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition

At the latest once baby is born, the question of breastfeeding vs formula might arise. A hundred years ago there would have been only one answer: Breastfeeding. However with time and technical developments, a second possibility- infant formula, has become more and more commonplace.

Regardless of whether women can (or want) to breastfeed their babies, resort to formula feeding or do both in parallel, the general recommendation of the National Breastfeeding Committee and the WHO state that breast milk and formula fulfill all the nutritional needs of babies within their first 6 months of life. Prior to baby’s fifth month, the introduction of solids and additional fluids should be avoided. (For those who can read German, here is a fact sheet from the National Breastfeeding Committee regarding breastfeeding – Empfehlung der Nationalen Stillkommission am BfR vom 1. März 2004).

Whatever mothers and families decide, the most important fundamentals for new parents and their babies are closeness, bonding and feeling good about their decisions, since happy parents mean happy children.

As your baby grows, questions regarding the introduction of solids might crop up. Questions such as:

  • When should I introduce solids?

  • How should I do it?
  • Puree or Baby Led Weaning? Home-made or jars?
  • What else do I have to think about regarding ‘weaning’?
  • etc.

It’s important to evaluate your own situation and needs and answer these accordingly, since every family is different.
